🩹🩺 Sports Medicine Program: Strom Thurmond Career & Technology Center
The Sports Medicine Program at the Strom Thurmond Career & Technology Center (STCTC) offers students an immersive, hands-on pathway into the high-demand field of healthcare focused on the active body. This comprehensive program is designed to train future athletic trainers, physical therapists, doctors, and other allied health professionals by providing foundational medical knowledge and practical injury care skills.
📚 Program Course Sequence
Our multi-level curriculum is built to progress students from foundational concepts to advanced, clinical-style practice and rehabilitation techniques.
Sports Medicine 1 (SM1): Foundations of Athletic Care
This introductory course emphasizes injury prevention, first aid, and emergency care. Students learn the components of exercise science, basic anatomy, and physiology. A major focus is on acquiring essential certifications:
● CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
● First Aid
● AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
Sports Medicine 2 (SM2): Assessment and Treatment
Building on the foundation, SM2 dives into the mechanism and evaluation of athletic injuries. Students develop practical skills in:
● Taping and wrapping techniques for various joints (ankle, wrist, knee, etc.).
● Injury assessment procedures (HOPS: History, Observation, Palpation, Special Tests).
● Rehabilitation principles and the use of basic therapeutic modalities.
Sports Medicine 3 (SM3): Advanced Clinical Techniques
The capstone course focuses on advanced assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of specific, complex athletic injuries. Students examine administrative aspects of sports medicine programs and explore the full career progression of an injured athlete. This level often includes opportunities for clinical observation or shadowing.
Medical Terminology
Crucial for all healthcare careers, this course is designed to teach students the language of medicine. You will learn to correctly build, pronounce, and understand medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols related to anatomy, procedures, and conditions, ensuring professional communication in any clinical setting.
🎓 Real-World Experience and Certifications
The STCTC Sports Medicine program prepares students with tangible credentials and practical skills that look great on college applications and resumes:
● Hands-on Lab Training: Utilize an on-site athletic training lab to practice taping, wrapping, and basic rehabilitation exercises.
● Clinical Shadowing: Students gain valuable experience by observing and assisting Certified Athletic Trainers and other healthcare professionals in real-world settings (often at school athletic events or local clinics).
● National Certifications: The program aligns with national standards, allowing students to pursue credentials that validate their skills for entry-level work or further study.
