The Cosmetology program at the Strom Thurmond Career and Technology Center (STCTC) is a rigorous, multi-year pathway designed to provide students with the 1,500 clock hours of training and comprehensive knowledge required to take the South Carolina Board of Cosmetology licensing examination. This program transforms students into professional, client-ready salon artists and technicians.


📚 Course Sequence and Curriculum

 

This program is a three-year commitment typically beginning in the 10th grade. Students complete five courses totaling nine units to gain the necessary technical skills, scientific theory, and practical experience.

Goal & Outcome

Intro to Cosmetology

Foundational Concepts & Safety. Overview of the beauty industry, salon ecology, infection control, professionalism, state laws, and basic client services.

Establishes the necessary foundation in safety, business, and industry ethics.

Cosmetology 1 & 2 (Level 1)

Hair Care Fundamentals & Science. In-depth study of trichology (hair, scalp), anatomy, chemistry, haircutting, styling, basic hair color, and thermal services.

Students master basic techniques and prepare for advanced chemical work.

Cosmetology 3 & 4 (Level 2)

Advanced Techniques & Licensure Prep. Focus on chemical texture services (perming, relaxing), advanced hair coloring, facial treatments, skin care, nail enhancement, and salon management.

Students complete all required practical hours, refine client communication skills, and prepare directly for the SC State Board Exam.


🌟 State Licensure and Professional Readiness

 

Our program's curriculum is directly aligned with the requirements of the South Carolina Board of Cosmetology, making your path to licensure efficient and effective.

●       SC State Board Exam: Upon successful completion of all coursework and required clock hours, students are eligible to sit for the two-part (Theory and Practical) state licensing examination.

●       Hands-on Experience: Students practice skills on manikins and gain real-world experience by providing services to community clients in the STCTC student salon, building confidence and a client portfolio.

●       Career Focus: Graduates are prepared for careers as Licensed Cosmetologists, Estheticians, Nail Technicians, Salon Managers, and even Barbers in all 50 states (licensure is required to practice).

Cosmetology Teacher

Dr. Jackie Kennion

Dr. Kennion has worked in the Edgefield County School District for over 36 years. She is a 1984 graduate of Strom Thurmond High School who now serves as the Strom Thurmond Career & Technology Center's cosmetology instructor.

She joined the Edgefield County School District in August 1987.

Dr. Kennion educates and trains future salon professionals in the fundamentals of the beauty industry through hands-on instruction, and teaches students what they need to pass the State Board exam and become licensed cosmetologists.

With firsthand training and practical experience, Dr. Kennion guides students through separate phases of their education.
